Faith and Justice

Takin’ It to the Streets is rooted in a deep spiritual tradition and a legacy of social change realized through the Faith and Justice aspect of the festival. Join a number of interactive sessions with spiritual leaders, activists, organizers, and community members in discussing collective solutions to relevant issues. Included in the day’s agenda will be discussions around human rights, building healthy and sustainable communities, and spiritual development.

One Chicago, One Nation Community Ambassador Induction

10:00am-11:00am

Celebrate the induction of 150 Community Ambassadors from the One Chicago, One Nation initiative. Launched in January 2010 by One Nation with The Chicago Community Trust, Link TV, Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC), and Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN), One Chicago, One Nation brings together Chicagoans of diverse faiths and cultures, with an emphasis on the Muslim community, to get to know each other through addressing local needs.

Uniting for Change: Celebrating the Grassroots Human Rights Movement

Learn how you can get involved in the movement to promote human rights and racial equity at the grassroots level! Join IMAN and the United Congress of Community and Religious Organizations as we celebrate the struggles our communities have overcome and mobilize for the work we have yet to do.

The Color Green: Greening Our Plates, Our Homes & Our Lives

Learn practical steps for incorporating environment-friendly habits into our daily lives, and for eating foods that contribute the most to a healthy lifestyle and the least to a negative environmental impact. Explore the link between faith and the environment and the duty we have towards both.

IMAN: The Movement

2pm-3pm

Join IMAN and join the movement. From a project that trains formerly incarcerated men to retrofit and construct their own transitional houses, to a career development program that helps turn around lives, to a wellness campaign that works to restore stability, health and racial reconciliation to a community, learn what exciting IMAN initiatives you can get involved with. Hear from IMAN’s incredible supporters and scholars about what makes IMAN’s work a model for other United States communities.

Healin’ the Hood: Liquor Stores, Economic Development & Racial Reconciliation

3:30pm-4:30pm

Join IMAN’s campaign for community health and wellness and tackle the issue of food deserts, racial strife and the prevalence of liquor stores in low-income communities of color. Learn about alternative business models, innovative programs and policies aimed at addressing these dynamics, and network with other leaders to take action on these issues in your community.

Faith & Action: What Ties Us to the Cause

5pm-6pm

Be inspired as scholars, faith leaders and activists link critical points of faith to everyday activism. Learn how scholars and faith leaders tie the knot between the Prophetic example and the struggle on the streets today, and how activists make the connection between their work and the scriptural example of “knowing one another.”
